Develop technique that will put you heads and shoulders above other players

Most guitarists are able to distinguish between very good or even great players and those players who are just AMAZING. And the primary thing that makes the difference is that amazing players possess a highly developed sense of rhythm (besides possessing all of the other qualities which makes one amazing). And of course this includes very clean and solid picking techniques and developing your ear in order to apply just the right rhythmic approach and technique to any given situation. Obviously, you do need to know the right notes to play (scales, arpeggios, licks against chord changes). These topics are covered very well in many of this author's other books. But once you feel confident that you know the fretboard relative to chord changes - then this book (or the things covered in this book) need to be your focus. This book covers in perfectly clear detail, many exercises to help you build and use technique in many different scenarios. Once you begin to master what's offered in this book, you will have achieved a level of real musicality in your playing instead of vanilla, rote executions of scales and licks - no matter how smooth and fast you are with these executions. And as you use this book, just remember to stay experimental and above all, have fun!

Excellent!

I am fairly new to guitar,having been playing off and on less than a year. I get frustrated and quit for a bit then pick it up again. I've tried many different books and internet videos for help over the course of a year.

I'm at a point in my playing that I can play well many open chords, barre chords, and have memorized the 1st 4 positions of the Am Pent. scale.

Sadly, I've been unable to do much with it. As I have many issues with timing. Its very poor, and I struggle with it. Constantly falling out of time, having issues if going from 1/4-1/8 - 16th notes etc.
Pick control - Pick/Hand co-ordination has also been a huge fail for me. Specifically when picking individual notes and string skipping.

Basically, when it comes to memorizing a chord shape or scale pattern, I pick it up rather quickly. Beyond that its been a tough road for me.

I picked up this book, since it claimed to target the specific areas I need the most help in. And I'm glad I did.

Ive only been at it for 3 days now, but already showing improvement in my weakest areas.Though I still need to do a lot of work, I am no doubt seeing results.

Mr. Alexander does a great job explaining what and why you are doing what you are doing and how to properly do it. And it works.

I've also learned that I'm simply trying to bite off more than I can chew by playing too quickly too soon, thus building bad technique and habits.

So, I have been doing several 15-30 minute practice sessions a day thus far, doing exactly as instructed. And a few minutes of just whatever.... but slowing it way down and implementing picking/timing lessons Ive learned so far.
There really is an improvement.

He also was kind enough to send me a PDF copy so I can print out for my music stand. Sometimes its easier than the Kindle version.

I highly recommend this book. I will be trying others as well once I get a better grip on my biggest issues, which this book covers.
Very satisfied and will buy more of Mr.Alexanders books in the future.

A solid set of exercises to build and maintain single-note technique

As guitarists advance in the playing, the focus frequently shifts to increasing harmonic knowledge and overall musical theory chops, leaving continued work on developing and maintaining physical technique mostly on the back burner. While physical technique is not the be all and end all of your playing, failure to improve, or at least maintain, technique can lead to entrenchment in the same old playing ruts. Based on the premise that, although you only need sufficient technique to play what you hear in your head, your musical imagination, and hence your internal composer, will grow bigger ears with each new bit of knowledge you pick up, your physical technique needs to be expanding as your theoretical knowledge does. Hence this book. A series of exercises designed to improve picking accuracy and efficiency, rhythmic accuracy and legato technique, they're well organized and walk you through a program of fine-tuning the technique you'll need to keep up with the expansion of your internal musical universe.

The book begins with the basics of the Win32 API, including system dynamic-link libraries (DLLs). The author covers Win32 API declarations and the often tricky mappings between Visual Basic and Win32 C data types. (His tips on using Strings will be indispensable for anyone who has ever struggled with Unicode Strings within Visual Basic.) The author uses a simple file encryption program to illustrate basic Win32 calls for better file input/output (I/O), including reading and writing files.

Bock also offers tips for extending user interfaces, including how to customize the TreeView control. Next come GDI graphics calls, including customizing a form's background and using bitmaps for menu items. Tips on setting hooks for your windows and using callback functions round out the tour. Final chapters introduce material on COM that shows you how to package modules using Win32 calls into reusable objects.

Visual Basic programmers who have some experience programming with Visual Basic, who now want to exploit the resources of the Windows environment.

Since the book's primary focus is on the Win32 API, the reader should be able to use either VB4 32-bit or VB5, except for the sections on callbacks (only VB5 can be used in these areas). Also, the calls will be limited to 32 bit calls - no 16 bit calls will be addressed.

The author will handle any knowledge of building components to encapsulate API functionality - it will not be a requirement of the reader to understand COM at any level. All component examples will be specified in full for the reader to keep the emphasis on the API calls.

About the Author
Jason Bock has received both a Bachelors and Masters Degree in Electrical Engineering from Marquette University. He has worked primarily in VB since vesion 3.0 writing client/server applications for a variety of business applications, ranging from application tracking systems to payroll processing to custom query analysis tools. These systems used and/or integrated with a multitude of different technologies and software packages, such as SQL Server, COM, Sybase, Oracle, PeopleSoft, and MS Office. Currently, Jason is a Consultant for Keane, Inc., where he is able to pursue his professional and personal interest in pushing VB as far as it can go.

When he's not starting at a computer monitor, Jason enjoys golfing, playing tennis, biking, spending a lot of time with his wife, and playing with his cat Simon.

Not as useful as I though it would be

I bought this book about a year ago when I had a need to learn how to use Win32 API. I read a little, then started to skim, then skip sections, then put it aside completely where it collected dust while I found my answers elsewhere. I eventually picked it up again after I had become casually familiar with the Win32 API and realized that my remorse over the purchase wasn't the book's fault - rather it was my expectations of what the book was going to deliver.
The Win32 API is vast and complicated. A casual glance at Win32 API books that go over just the Functions and Types (in only 4000 pages) will prove it. Any programmer looking at this book to solve a specific problem for them should keep looking. The book does not cover that many specific API situations, but rather explains syntax and structure, how's and when's, etc (metaphorically explaining what the abbreviations for a cup or tablespoon is and how to read a recipe card rather than how to cook any particular dish itself). I recommend the book as either your first introduction to the Win32 API after you have got VB6 down but before you actually need the Win32 API, or as a refresher for those who know the general gist of how to use the Win32 API, but want to fill in the gaps of what some things are, why they are used, and when to use them.

Excellent Book for API Beginners!

Personally I thought this book was great for progammers just starting out with the API or Applications Programmers Interface. The examples are well laid out and the code is mostly bug free. Yes this book does not have the depth of some other earlier mentioned books, however it is important to realize that this is a tutorial. Because this book claims to be a tutorial it should be rated on how well it teaches the subject. Personally I think the author did a great job and I learned a significant amount from this book.

Caves du Vatican

This is an absoltely brilliant short novel by one of France's great writers of the 20th century, and a Nobel Prize winner. Gide cleverly weaves the stories of the families of three sisters around the murder of one of the sisters' husbands, a modern day crusader seeking to liberate the kidnapped pope. The novel focuses on the "gratuitous" killer Lafcadio, who asserts his freedom through the crime but quickly finds himself bound by unforeseen contingencies.

A French mandarin

French has always been my second language (I grew up in Geneva, though schooled in England). I know French literature well. I had never before read Andre Gide, a failure for which, being a novelist myself, I can give no reason whatsoever.

M. Gide's French gives me very great pleasure. It has the dry, supple feel of snakeskin, beautiful in its pauses and considerations, that the very best classical French does better than perhaps any other language (certainly any of the ones I know myself). It would be stately, if it were not quite often sly.

And sly for reason. This is a decidedly odd book. Satire? No, too much real and sympathetic feeling. Detective story? No, though sometimes in form. Mystery? Too ridiculous. Existentialism? Maybe, the trouble being that in seventy years of literary life I have never discovered what existentialism means. There is certainly a serious and dreadful existential act, I suppose, followed by what would seem to be social satire, or maybe it is more existentialism. Is it even a spiritual testament? Could be, but that is such a rude suggestion in France

I do not mean to be dismissive. This is an impressive book, very well worth reading, moving easily between its moods, elegant in thought as well as language. M. Gide was a very great master. It is well to approach great masters with faith, until it is found misplaced. I am not at that place. I will approach more Gide, and with respect

This is a wonderful book. It is an elegantly (though not pretentiously) written work whose story is driven not only by an interesting plot but also by very interesting and strange characters. This is one of my favorite books. A classic.

A worthy addition to the Enochian corpus

Scott Stenwick has given us a worthy addition to the contemporary Enochian corpus in "Mastering the Mystical Heptarchy." The first book to outline a system of practice for working with the Planetary system of Dr. John Dee and Sir Edward Kelley, the "Heptarchy" is both a succinct explanation of the source material and a clear outline of how it can be used by Enochian research groups today. Author Stenwick's eclectic style reflects an approach to spirituality that is in wide use among contemporary Enochian magicians, bringing together practices dating back to the sixteenth century and earlier, and twenty-first century approaches that have grown out of the work of late modern esotericists like the Golden Dawn and Aleister Crowley. At the same time, Stenwick is careful to make clear which parts of his book postdate the work of Dee and Kelley, and to offer suggestions for practitioners who prefer to work in a more traditional methodology.

Although there are a few rough spots--the book would benefit from the services of a careful editor to fix the odd typo and massage the occasional weak phrasing--these are minor matters. This is, after all, intended to be used as a contemporary grimoire, not an academic opus.

In fact, such lapses are few and easily ignored, and are very much outweighed by the book's many strong points. This book belongs on the shelf of anyone interested in Enochian, next to those of Lon Milo Duquette, Colin Campbell, Aleister Crowley, Joseph Peterson, Aaron Leitch, Teresa Burns, and others.

Good book on a little covered piece of Dee history

This is a good book on an often overlooked piece of Dee history, and it's a good read for anyone interested in this small portion of Enochian magic. The book is comprehensive enough that anyone can pick it up and begin using it, or you can bookmark it and play "choose your own ritual" with the chapters how it's written. Well worth the price.

The last big piece of Enochian Magick

Mastering the Mystical Heptarchy is a book finaling all big parts of Enochian Magick; the other two being the Forces from the Watchtowers and The 30 AEthyrs. While the other two parts have been written about again and again in various books in the last 30 years, there was almost complete silence regarding the Mystical Heptarchy.
This book is therefore a very welcomed, nee needed addition to any serious Student of Enochian Magick.

It includes very nicely done 7 talismans for each day of the week, plus the eight for the Big King and His Prince, the necessary Angelic Keys are of course also present. All the needed stuff is here from Dee and Kelly, including the furniture of the Temple, Holy Table, Sigillum dei AEmeth, PELE ring etc.
This is topped with Dee's Invocations which are also available in revised, Thelemic version!!! Oh, how I wish I had it years ago!

All in all I would say this:
Mastering the Mystical Heptarchy, by Scott Michael Stenvick is a complement of Enochian Vision Magick, by Lon DuQuette, so if you bought that one, you should also buy this one. You now have a complete system in your hands and you can be merry!

Pretty good stuff.

There are lots of free tabs on the web, and lots of free videos on youtube to teach basic clawhammer tunes, so why buy this?
Well, in short, these are pretty well done tabs. Not super simple versions, not very elaborate versions, just right for teaching the basics of the tune and still enough to actually sound musical. In that sense, they are better the 90% of what I've seen out there. Also they are priced right, and it's convenient to have on my Kindle.
I purchased some of the authors other tab e-books awhile back and liked them, so I decided to try this on. I would recommend all of his stuff.
I would think a few variations tabbed would be nice, and beware if your tablet (Kindle) isn't at least a 7 inch screen, you may have a time tying to read it.
One thing I like about the series, is that instead of making one "big book of tabs" the author made several small ones, and made the price 1.99. This means I can pick and choose which tunes I want.
