Handy advice on making IT work well for a business

People who are good with computer hardware and software often do not the same types of priorities and motivations as those who run the businesses which employ them, and accordingly large enterprises usually encounter some difficulty in making Information Technology work well within the context of the business. This book provides a collection of eight articles published in the past decade addressing these issues. Some of the ideas discussed:

* Jeanne Ross and Peter Weill: A company's management team as a whole must take responsibility for particular strategic decisions regarding IT, rather than simply delegating those decisions to the IT department.
* Charlie Feld and Donna Stoddard: Effective use of IT requires a long-term IT renewal plan linked to corporate strategy, a simplified unifying corporate technology platform, and a highly functional performance-oriented IT organization
* Nicholas Carr: There is no longer much advantage to be gained from IT now that everyone has it. To avoid overinvesting: spend less; follow, don't lead; and focus on risks, not opportunities.
* Ron Adner and Daniel Snow: It your technology gets superseded, you can still make a bold retreat by focusing on a niche market where the old technology still has advantages or relocating to a new market where the old technology is a superior offering.
* Richard Nolan and Warren McFarlan: The approach which a board takes to IT depends on what strategic mode the company is in. In support mode, IT systems are not critical and expense can be minimised. In factory mode, systems need to be reliable but not state-of-the-art. In turnaround mode, there is big expenditure on IT but reliability is not yet critical. In strategic mode, IT must be reliable but also innovative to provide competitive advantages.
* Thomas Davenport: Competitive success can be gained through sophisticated data collection and analysis, particularly when it involves focused analytics efforts, establishing an analytics culture, hiring the right people and using the right technology.
* Andrew McAfee and Erik Brynjolfsson: To gain a competitive edge, deploy a consistent technology platform rather than a jumble of legacy systems, innovate better ways of working, and propagate those process innovations throughout the organization.
* Josh Bernoff and Ted Schadler: Companies can free employees to experiment with new technologies if management encourages innovation while managing risk, IT supports and scales employees' projects, and employees act as "highly empowered resourceful operatives".

In my opinion, some of the articles are more helpful than others. Nicholas Carr's advice that IT is now finished and there are no more competitive advantages to be gained has probably not withstood the test of time since it was written in 2003. On the other hand, the last four articles are filled with useful ideas that managers will find helpful in dealing with IT.

You'll learn something from this book! I'm sure of it!

Great book for a newbie learning about marketing! This book doesn't have all the answers you may ask about marketing, but it answers a lot! He gives good basic guidelines that you should follow, not just as a marketer, but as a marketing firm and company. This is an old school book, so it doesn't include anything about digital marketing. But if you do any marketing outside the digital world, this is a great guide! Some chapters are better than others, depending on what you want to get out this book. I found the information for large marketing firms,TV ads, ads for travel, and ads for international firms to be boring, because that doesn't relate to me, but everything else was well worth my time! You might feel the same way, but remember,the marketing industry is big, with so many roles to play in it!

Advertising basics delightfully exlpained

If you are responsible for advertising or promoting a company, a product or a cause, this is a superlative book to read. David Ogilvy, founder of Ogilvy & Mather advertising agency, was one of the most successful advertisers of the 20th century.

In the 21st century it is easy to get caught up with blogging, social media and email campaigns and think that somehow advertising methods of the past won't work here. Although written before the internet was something that everybody uses, the principles of advertising and his methods couldn't be more appropriate.

He was a great believer in market research and good, simple communication. His book is a perfect example - it is extremely easy to ready, very entertaining, and wonderfully useful. There are tried-and-true ways to advertise that work and Ogilvy explains them well with examples of advertising you'll instantly recognize (if you were around in the second half of the 20th century). This book is more than worth its price if you need to advertise.

Good historical reference.

Maybe I had big expectations over this classic reading, at the end, and as anticipated, some of the concepts and discussions are now outdated.
The part I enjoyed most was where Mr. Ogilvy gives a small biography and story behind those who he believes are the pillars of modern advertising. A good source to have in a snapshot interesting background of some of the biggest names in advertising.
Also, it was fun to read, at the end Mr. Ogilvy's prediction of changes to come in the future and compare them to what we know today it actually happen.

I wanted to like this but I was disappointed

I really question the other reviews. I wanted to like this but I was disappointed. The questions overall were fine but there were many mistakes and whoever proofed it did a poor job. The worst part was the rationale. They told you the correct answer but often did not tell you anything about why the others where incorrect. I understand the price is a deal but you get what you pay for.
If the publisher reads this, here are a few thought. I believe it was question 88 where the answer given and the rationale were not matching. In the answers, half the time the question will tell you it is a select all but then it often would not. Lastly, I would have to look back but somewhere around question 20 there is a duplicate question or at least very similar talking and what gives the right to delegate duties.

I struggled with the application of the concept of unconditional love. Until this book

I'm a physician. An M.D. I've raised 3 children, ages 33, 30, and 28. I've struggled through multiple drug abuse with one child, and gross insecurity in 2 others. Although I have been a believer for several years in unconditional love, I struggled with the application in my relationships. Until this book. A parenting book that explains unconditional acceptance. With the book half-finished, convicted of its truth, and with tears in my eyes, I began practicing unconditional acceptance with my children several months ago as i slowly digested the remainder of the book. The rewards, especially with my child who was a drug addict for 14 years, have been nothing short of miraculous. If you buy only one book on parenting in your life buy this one.

Life Changing, Saved our teen!

I'm so happy to review this book because it absolutely changed my life and my daughter's life forever! I will be honest with you and tell you that I was at my wit's end. My 13 year old, who used to be a sweet kid became constantly defiant and depressed at home. The kid who obviously loved me, I'm a really cool mom, now ignored me and rolled her eyes. Her grades were suffering and she began stitching into her skin during school. This is when someone sews shapes into their skin with a needle and thread. So I got this book.

I read the book very quickly because it resonated so strongly with all I was going through. Our society values peer influence so highly and at such a superficial level that we are losing our kids to isolation and hopelessness disguised by technology and unhealthy friendships.

I pulled my daughter out of school in her last semester of 7th grade. This meant that she would have to repeat 7th grade and be a year behind. As a single mother with her and a baby, as well as a full-time career I committed to homeschool her. We worked out a strange schedule of night and weekend study focused on real life skills and developing her values system. She was indignant...at first. After the first two weeks things started to ease. She began applying herself more, she softened, started taking great love and responsibility with her sister and with our home. I followed the advice of the book and rebuilt our relationship and the tenderness we have for each other. She was honest with me! She broke down and told me about all her fears and walls.

The girl that just wanted to be on the internet or texting in bed was now going to the gym several times a week, going for walks with the kids around the neighborhood, volunteering to help younger students learn to read and really working on improving our family relationships. She stopped yelling at me and ignoring me!! She reached a healthy weight, she was way too skinny.

During that one school year we did two years of work and caught her up. She entered high school today, right on schedule! She held my hand as we drove to the bus stop. She was excited about meeting new kids and really applying herself at school. This week she received an award for her volunteer service over the past year. Also, on a daily basis, I have people tell me what a remarkable and intelligent child I have. Last year, she was depressed and aloof, people were concerned about her.

Reading this book led me to make a very difficult decision that I thought was absolutely beyond my capacity as a mother. I believe if I hadn't put her first and done everything I could to get her away from her unhealthy friendships that I would've lost her forever and her academic possibilities and life possibilities would have suffered severely. No one agreed that I was doing the right thing! (The school, her father, my mother, no one understood why I needed to this.) This book gives practical step-by-step instructions to get your kids back from unhealthy destructive behaviors that are becoming more and more prevalent as a result of our current culture. If you are losing your child people act fast and be brave. It was the best decision I ever made.

I recommend to read this when you have a little baby

A MUST HAVE in today's society and raising children. Very helpful for understanding today's problem with peer orientation, a problem that is not named literally but is there. I recommend to read this when you have a little baby, the sooner the better because dealing with a teenager obsessed with his smartphone and peer group is unimaginable. Thanks to this book (and , Naomi Aldort's Raising our Children Raising ourselves, Bolwby's and Harry Harlow's experiments, John Holt's books) we decided to carry our children in baby carrier, sleep with them in family bed (as Gordon mentions, the first attachment is the physical, don't recommend to skip that) and also homeschool/unschool! For us all - the best decision and raise we ever made. For people interested in this I recommend also Naomi Aldort's set of 7CDs Trusting Our Children, Trusting Ourselves - for Homeschooling (sometimes used from 14dollars!). I can't after reading these materials ever give children in daycare or public school. There is no way back, but it is very very helpful also to understand your own person and childhood.

I've finally received this book and it was well worth waiting for. The recipes are healthy and tasty and this home made chocolate makes huge impression on guests. Highly recommended!

I didn't even know you could make healthy chocolate

This cookbook looks fantastic! I have not been able to actually make any of the recipes yet, so will update this once we have, but the actual recipes look really good, and the pictures are really nice. I purchased this because we are moving slowly to a raw vegan diet, at least for the time being, to eradicate some health issues and for permanent weight loss. My husband is begrudgingly going along with this, and one of his biggest issues with it was that he would not be able to eat chocolate. This has solved that problem, because from others I know, this type of chocolate is both healthy to consume (and actually good for you) and supposedly tastes even better than regular chocolate. We'll see... He looked through it and is drooling over some of the pictures and is eager and anxious for me to get going with some of the recipes! :)

You need to be aware though, that this requires LOTS of unusual ingredients, which are not readily available, so be prepared to spend some money initially, stocking up on them (most likely sourced online). Also, it is quite annoying to read some of the author's notes because she is clearly from a part of England where they add an "r" to many words that don't actually have one. For example, she talks about agave nectar as a sweetener, and states that it is pronounced "agar-vay", which is nonsense. The word is pronounced "aga-vay", and only those who add "r" where it doesn't belong would pronounce it the other way. She says that xylitol is pronounced "zy-ler-tol", but again...incorrect. I feel that an editor should have caught this and corrected it, because for the rest of the world who don't add the "r" in to words where it doesn't exist, this could be confusing - especially for people who are unfamiliar with these ingredients. They will then mispronounce them, possibly embarrassing themselves in front of someone else who knows how to correctly pronounce the word. I realize that this is a small point, but those sorts of things annoy me in books, so I figured I'd point it out.
I will try to remember to update once we make some of these, but if I don't, assume that they are delicious if I have not changed the review to reflect otherwise...
Update - I have made some of the recipes in this book and so far they have all been fab! We've enjoyed everything in it and love that it is really healthy too!

A delightful book

This is a beautifully presented book with lovely illustrations and clear recipe instructions. I am gradually working my way through the recipes and was delighted with the birthday cake, which was much admired and enjoyed!

Its well worth making the effort to obtain the ingredients as the results are terrific. The desserts are all healthy and nutritious as well as tasting good.

The cake and biscuits could be kept in the fridge for several days, which is great.

Non-vegan friends have also appreciated my efforts so a winner all round!

Cute, hot and suspenseful book!

I love Xander! This is one of the MC Books I've ever read!
I finished the book about an hour ago and still have so many feelings about it! I feel like reading it again! The story was written perfectly. I think the pace was fast but that put the story in a whole new level. Usually you need a larger amount of time to get things to happen in a book but the author worked the time and the development of Xander in the best way. She wrote memorable characters, they all had an impact in me. Xander, Gracie, Lily, Dude, and even Hank. And Xander and Gracie are the cutest couple! I seriously want a Xander for myself. I love him and his love for Grace.
At the beggining of the story we meet Xander and Dude beating Hank and I was surprised when I learned why they were doing it. The reasons were so pure and beautiful. I mean, I really though Lily was dumb for letting Hank beat her, but I cannot judge her, her story was a bit complex and I couldn't understand her point of view until the end, and I think it makes sense how she thinks and what she does. Her words really touched me. She expressed her feelings in a beautiful way, I was proud of her and so was Gracie, I think.
Now, about Grace. She's the best female character ever! She's a strong, independant woman who doesn't let anyone pass her over. I love her attitude, all us woman should be like her. She teaches us about how important it is to defend ourselves, to be gentle, and about forgiveness. She is the perfect girl for Xander. And Xander OMG, I truly love him. He is all you need in a bad boy. But he is such a good boy too! He is nice, and gentle, and caring, and so sweet to Grace!. He listens to her, and he is not afraid to admit his feelings towards her, and he is hot, SO HOT! There were steamy scenes and they were so fun and hot and cute, and all the good adjectives you can imagine.

So, the characters were excellent and so was the story! There weren't that many twists like you would have expected but it doesn't matter because the ones there were, were AMAZING. I could never have imagined how the plot was going to turn out, but the way it did WOW, I was amazed... The author really does a great job in this. An excellent job I must say. So thank you Margaret for this beautiful, fun, hot and OH SO PERFECT story

In 1998, Los Angeles urologist Dr. Eric Robbins started using pranic healing in his practice when he decided to try it on a patient who was not responding to standard medicine. Dr. Robbins had seen this patient's name on the roster of the surgical ward for a long time. As frequently happens with complex cases, once things start going really wrong with the body, they seem to escalate. The patient developed multiple intracultaneous fistulae, yeast sepsis, and a pulmonary embolism. He wasn't expected to live. "I went into the guy's room and I said, 'Look, we're doing everything we can for you within the realm of standard medicine. Can I try some of this weird energy stuff on you?'" Dr. Robbins began applying pranic healing daily. Within two days, his fever and nausea disappered. Within one week his pulse rate decreased and he eventually got strong enough to tolerate a final surgery to repair his fistulae and went on to make a full recovery.

Dr. Benny Atnil is another physician who uses pranic healing in his practice. One of his success stories is of healing a 31-year-old man of Diabetes Mellitus. After intensive treatment with pranic healing three times a week, the patient's blood glucose went from 175 to 108. The patient was able to gradually reduce and then stop taking his medication. His last tests showed him free from Diabetes Mellitus.

About the Author
Master Choa Kok Sui is a Filipino-Chinese scientist, chemical engineer, and successful businessman. A Master of Energy, he has spent more than 20 years researching and experimenting with the wise use of subtle energy. He is the founder of the Institute of Inner Studies and the World Pranic Foundation.

He has a rare depth of knowledge of the human energy system and is willing to share his skill, wisdom, and secrets. Through his teachings he has won the respect of healers and spiritual leaders worldwide. Because the techniques he teaches can be learned quickly by the average person, his work is spreading rapidly throughout the world.

This book is predominantly based on the instructions given to the author by my teacher, Mei Ling. Other teachers also provided useful information. Teacher Mei Ling is one of the mentors of the author in his esoteric studies. Many clairvoyant investigations and experiments were done. It is also based on the author's and his students' experiments and experiences. Some of the concepts and techniques are "new" and different from other books on color healing. Instructions on the art of instantaneous healing of fresh wounds are given in a later chapter.

Many of the advanced techniques should be practiced by experienced pranic healers, and not by beginners. Improper understanding of the principles and instructions, and improper application of the advanced healing techniques may result in adverse effects on the patients. READ THROUGH THIS BOOK TWICE BEFORE APPLYING ANY OF THE ADVANCED TECHNIQUES.

Advanced pranic healing uses color pranas and chakral techniques to produce very rapid healing and to cure difficult ailments.

Air prana, solar prana, and ground prana are made of "white" or general prana. Air and ground pranas are called vitality globules in esoteric parlance because, when they are seen clairvoyantly or by a person with slightly more sensitive eyes, they appear as small spheres or globules of light. Vitality globules come in different sizes. Some contain more units of "white" prana and some contain less.

Ground vitality globules interpenetrate the ground and extend several inches away from it. They are more dense or more closely-packed and usually bigger than air vitality globules. Some of the bigger air vitality globules can be easily seen by just staring at the sky for a few minutes especially just before sunset. You do not need to be a clairvoyant to be able to see them. Many people are able to see them in a few sessions. With more practice, you will also be able to see ground vitality globules just a few inches away from the ground.

COLOR PRANAS

Vitality globules (conglomerations of units of white prana) are absorbed by the chakras where they are digested and broken down into their components. When white prana is digested, it produces six types of color pranas corresponding to the colors of the rainbow. A substantial amount of air prana is absorbed directly by the front and back spleen chakra. Air prana is broken down to different color pranas and distributed to the other chakras. Ground prana is absorbed through the sole chakras then goes to the basic chakra. A portion of the ground prana is directed upward to the spine and other chakras while a larger portion is directed to the perineum minor chakra, to the navel chakra, then to the spleen chakra where it is broken down and distributed to the other chakras. All these take place automatically, or at the subconscious level.

"White" prana is composed of red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and violet pranas.

HOW TO USE COLOR PRANA

Color prana is more specialized and more potent than white prana. Using color prana instead of white prana is just like approaching a specialist instead of a general practitioner. When using color prana, avoid projecting dark color prana since it may have adverse effects. In some cases, it may have a reverse reaction. For example, light red prana has a strengthening effect, but dark red prana has an overwhelming effect and will weaken the treated part. When projecting color prana, it is safer and more effective to use a light or pastel color.

The potency of a light color prana can be further diluted by combining it with white prana. For example, one can visualize the projected prana as luminous white at the core with light red at the periphery to strengthen an organ. It is better and safer to combine a color prana of lighter shade with white prana. White prana is the harmonizing prana. It is harmonizing in the sense that it provides the other color pranas required in healing and it redistributes excess color pranas from the treated area to other parts of the body. In general, better, faster, and safer results are obtained by combining white prana (about 70%) with light color prana (about 30%) than just light color prana since white prana provides the other color pranas required in healing. On rare occasions, if necessary, I use light color prana for more potent effects.

You may visualize the projected prana as: (1) luminous white at the core with the color prana at the periphery; (2) color prana at the core and the white prana at the periphery; or (3) light color prana thoroughly mixed with white prana. Visualize luminous white light (white prana) being projected. Then add a light tinge of the color prana, which results in a very light pastel color. Method 1 and method 2 are the same because it has been clairvoyantly observed that these two patterns change alternately, continuously, and rapidly from one pattern to the other. Method 3 produces more subtle pranic energy and is quite safe in general.

When energizing with color pranas, it is safer to flick the hand a few times before energizing with another color prana.

Book helped my friend, thanks

This book was purchased on behalf of a friend, who wanted her husband to read it, following his recent disclosure to her that he may be gay. They both found this book interesting and useful and were grateful for the insights provided into what some can find to be a difficult and/or confusing area of understanding. THE FIRST STEP TO BEGIN MY RECOVERY BEGAN WITH THIS BOOK

This book opened my eyes to my past that my mind had blocked out. I now understand why I have done and still do some of the things I don't want to do. I was able to see what I had lost and what was taken from me. Most of my life I was seeking an illusion now therre is some reality in my life. I am not a freek I was robbed of more than my innocance I lost most of my life. Freedom is possiable and I now know there is more hope than I ever thought there was. Buy the book and get free. I have even bought this book for some friends so they can see that they (we) are not alone in (our) their pain
