Matthew is the most familiar of the gospels, best known for its parables, miracle narratives, and the long Sermon on the Mount. Recognized by the early Church as the most fitting introduction to the New Testament, its special concern is to announce Jesus as the fulfillment of the Old Testament. Hence its emphasis on the Law, on ethics based on the traditional theology of the Covenant, and on the centrality of Messianic hope.

This commentary sets the understanding of Matthew in the context of its author's own religious and secular background. Believing that the text should be approached directly, the writers of the commentary make constant use of the recently discovered historical and linguistic evidence now available to elucidate it. This approach results in placing Jesus firmly within the framework of ascertainable Jewish tradition in first-century Palestine.

The writers hold that the claim of Jesus to fulfill the Law and not to abolish it must be taken seriously. They have therefore taken a fresh look at the legal discussions in Matthew. In the light of their examination, there emerges first a revaluation of the meaning attached to such key words as "parables" and "hypocrite" and then a new and vital significance for such words.

The result is a new respect for Matthew, a highly reliable early source for the ministry of Jesus, and an examination of that ministry uncluttered by the presuppositions of various forms of modern "Platonism."

Tries to cover too many bases

This book is fun to read and very well written. However, it seemed to try too hard to suit all audiences. The danger in that, of course, is that it doesn't do a great job for any one type of reader. I got this book for the basic baseball knowledge it contains--I recently got "hooked" on baseball, and wanted to know more about the rules, how to keep score, how statistics are computed and what they mean. And there is some of that in this book. However, a great deal more of the book is aimed at little leaguers--how to pick out equipment, how to practice, and so on. Then there are the sections on great players. I think the readers who pick up this book are going to want more in-depth information on the particular area they are interested in. So, this book may be your first book on baseball, but it won't be your last! Just whets the appetite, so to speak.
The book tries to do too much, and would have better served the reader by concentrating on one area. Nonetheless, Joe Morgan comes across as very knowledgeable and a great guy!

Seems to be designed for parents of Little Leaguers

I was hoping to get a primer on baseball that would help me to see and evaluate more of what was happening as I follow my team from my seat in the stands. What I got was mostly blah. Not up to the usual Dummies books, or perhaps I had too much background and I was looking for something more advanced? (I doubt THAT!) There is a decent glossary in the back and a page on keeping score and a chapter on the advantages and disadvantages of several Major League ballparks, but the rest was supremely forgettable to me. Your PYA (Page Yowza Average) may vary.

As good as it gets

There are so many things I like about this book. It’s an easy and interesting read, which wouldn’t be particularly remarkable except that the book is a POLICY discussion.
Guernsey and Levine ask: How will children learn to read in a digital world and how do we make that happen in equitable ways? they provide this context:
1. The U.S. is failing to ensure that all (or even most!) children become reasonably literate,
2. Individual and national success in the foreseeable future is dependent on having adequate literacy skills, and
3. Whether digital technologies are part of the problem or part of the solution depend on the choices we make.
I hope their well-documented discussion will, indeed, inform policy. I know it will help educators and parents develop a nuanced understanding of the issues. They manage to deal with substantive controversies (e.g., whole language vs. phonics, screens and attention span, reaching beyond English-only, play and toys that talk to/with children, etc.) without sensationalizing. I can see this being used in teacher ed and early childhood certification programs for years to come.

With a creative and thoughtful eye, the authors look for strengths and weaknesses in research, practices, and promises. Notable observations include:
* Media and reading are not polar opposites. To underscore media’s role as an integral part of an ecosystem that nurtures literacy, they coin the terms “redia” and “Redialand.”
* Though we often pay attention to what children are doing and viewing, much of the relevant impact comes from the ways that adults use media.
* Apps tend to target a very narrow niche of simple literacy skills. We need to ask if that’s because the format of apps just isn’t well suited for more complex skills or if we just haven't yet figured out how to use the structure well enough.
* For most apps it is very difficult to find the names of the makers, so users can’t really tell if there were education or literacy or child development specialists on the team. For a media literacy geek like me, it is thrilling to see people ponder the quintessential media literacy question, “Who made this and why?”

And they don’t stop there. Levine and Guernsey actually include a discussion of media literacy education as an essential strategy, a rarity for books focused on teaching with technology. (Full disclosure: they cite a chapter I wrote in a recent anthology [ASIN:0415725828 Technology and Digital Media in the Early Years: Tools for Teaching and Learning] in the discussion). For media literacy educators or advocates who have been frustrated at ISTE conferences where most folks talk about using technology without ever addressing how to help students think about the tech they use, or who have been at NCTE or IRA conferences with lots of people who deride electronic media, this book will feel like home – welcoming and comfortable.

I wish the authors had treated us to their thoughts on games and gamification – not simple alphabet games, but games as narrative or games as sources of conversation. The omission is a minor flaw in an otherwise valuable reference. It’s definitely worth your time.

You won’t walk away with specific app or video recommendations or advice on which tablet your school district should purchase, but you’ll understand the issues and the research that might guide those decisions. And you’ll have a vision of the opportunities.

Phenomenal. Tap, Click, Read is a must for parents, educators and policy makers. Lisa Guernsey & Michael Levine tackle a critical issue of how to modernize reading education and improve literacy. Equal parts - embracing all types of reading with parent involvement - is the only way to get our kids reading. The coolest thing about this book is the way the authors bring to life the content through the www.tapclickread.org site. Fantastic. Parents- buy one for you and another copy for your kid's school teachers.

Great Read--Best and Most Balanced Book on a Controversial Subject

As a mom of young kids and an educator I found this book to be the most helpful and well written one yet on the topic of early reading and screen-time! Why? Well first of all Guernsey and Levine have a very nice writing style and they seem to be objective--unlike other books on technology they write in plain language and they aren't impressed with all of the hype that technology companies and app developers would like us to swallow. Second, they take the reader on a journey from what they call the 'digital wild west' to a new place called Readialand, which hokey as it may sound at first blush, may in fact be the place our kids are most comfortable living forever more. Third, I also was shocked to learn that over half of all of American kids arent reading well by the time they are 9. Wow--that was a wake up call for me to make sure I am reading every night to my 3 and 6 year olds! Finally, They take the reader on really interesting trips to academic and industry labs and even internationally to see what experts are saying about what future reading in a digital age might look like. I came away with some real tips on things I can do as a teacher and more hopeful about the blizzard of media that surrounds us. All in all I really enjoyed this book--it was a quick read and highly informative!

Useful book for those who need meal ideas and love nicely designed, visually pleasing books

If you're looking to lose weight in 2011 (and beyond) or to maintain a loss, this book lays out a way to eat 1200 to 1600 (or 2000, if you're a big guy or super active) calories a day. I really love how it's in the EAT THIS NOT THAT vibe--lots of photographs of appealing snacks/meals that isn't married to an ideal. Some books are only low-carb or high carb or Paleo or "clean." This one allows for people who like convenience/packaged/frozen/fast food options on rushed or lazy days. (I am not much of a cook, so I like convenience foods and eating out.)

I am now starting a 1200 calorie program. I lost almost 35 pounds in the last 6 months by cutting down from 2400 calories (at which I was maintaining a morbidly obese weight) to roughly 1800 at first, then between 1400 to 1600, and now I'm lowering the bar.

Three meals selected from the roughly 400 calorie suggestions fits into a long-term plan for weight loss. Four meals from this book fit into a long-term plan for maintenance. (Rough estimates. Some petite or post-menopausal or sedentary woman will gain at that level, some will still lose). Page 14 has a guide to help you decide how many of these meals will suit your needs.

Lots of tips. Portion size estimation helpers. Quickie recipes from various dietitians, food celebrities, etc on " My Favorite 400 Calorie Meal"--a very nice detail.

If you're newish to dieting and are not portion or calorie-counting savvy, be sure to take the quiz on pp 6-7 on "How Many Calories Are In..." and then you see various photos of meals and snacks. (You will get hungry. Read this for reference AFTER you have eaten. Or eat one of the recommended meals first. Heh.) Also look at the "Healthy or Hefty" chart on pp 26-27.

Chapter 5 has a 2 Week Quick Slim program of planned meals to help jump start your diet. If what matters to you is nutrition, there's a 4-Star Nutrition System to help you make the smartest choices as you "mix and match" meals.

There's info on how to burn calories with specific activities, too.

There are sections (great pics) to show what to choose in the Freezer, at a Salad Bar, Cookout, Party, Bar, Movies, Vending Machine, Buffet what to stock your home with. You're being taught with lists and information and all these great PLATES...filled up for you with nummy stuff that won't kill your caloric budget. Success stories are included. It's so nicely done!

The book is set up so by the time you have studied it/read it/gone through it, you can start looking at meals through the 400-calorie lens. It's about getting used to proper portions/ratios/amounts so that you can just start automatically eating in a "slim for life" way.

I found many of the foods I already have on hand--Van's waffles, Cacadian Farms breakfast cereals, Kozy Shack sugar-free rice pudding, frozen veggies, organic yogurt, dried fruit, instant oatmeal, bottled dressings, soups, VitaTops, etc--featured in those "Easy Fix" features.

Again, kudos to the authors and photographers for making 400 calorie meals (not all, but many) so accessible and tasty looking and EASY to comprehend (ie, the strategies).

I really like this book. Great tool for dieters/maintainers.

One to get for 2011, ladies and gents.

I'm on a limited menu for a few months, but after that, this is teh book I'm going to revisit, along with Jackie Warner's (also has simple recipes) and Tosca Reno's and COOK THIS NOT THAT. With these, I should be able to get to a healthy weight and stay there...

400 Calorie Fix Makes Slim Simple

Recently introduced on Rachel Ray by Prevention editor, Liz Vaccariello, The 400 Calorie Fix describes itself as an easy way to get slim. Getting slim can be very difficult but The 400 Calorie Fix manages to simplify the process.

The guidelines behind the 400 Calorie Fix are easy. Eat 400 calories at four meals a day. The book teaches you to view food via a 400 calorie lens. 400 calories four times a day equals 1600 daily calories. This will result in weight loss for many people. Eat one less meal if you are sedentary. If you are very active eat one more.

To simplify the 400 calorie meal the book gives a wide variety of options. There is the plate method; mentally divide your plate into six sections. Fill one section with protein, two with starches like bread and grains and three with non-starchy veggies.

And there are other easy methods of building 400 calorie meals that suit your lifestyle. Sections include 400 calorie packaged meals (name brands given), 400 calorie take out meals, 400 calorie quick fix/no cook meal, 400 calorie soup, sandwich and salad recipes and many other ways to make your meal.

No food is off limits. Yes you can have chocolate, ice cream, pizza and other goodies. The authors use a star system. Blue is for protein, orange for fiber, red for good fats and green for fruits and veggies. They suggest you collect one of each a day to make sure you are eating nutritiously. Very easy to use.

I cannot imagine the work that must have gone into this book. An extensive array of recipes, mouth watering photographs, tons of tips and hints. So much so that the book can be overwhelming at first. The best way to work with the book is to go to the table of contents and pick the chapter that offers the type of 400 calorie meal you want. So for example if you are ordering take out, find it in the table of contents, then go to the chapter and make selections from the options given.

They also include pages on building a sandwich so it adds up to 400 calories (so you can mix and match), quick breakfast picks, and so much more. The book ties in nicely with another of Prevention's successful weight loss plans, "The Flat Belly Diet". The difference is this book does not require that you eat a MUFA (good fat) at every meal.

This is the second time I've bought this book. The first was 9 months earlier and the best investment in myself I've ever made. I've been a dieter for many years. The 400 Calorie Fix changed my life. I diet no more. The proof is the 38 pounds I've lost since starting the Fix. The Fix is a Way of Life not a diet. The Fix teaches you how to eat everything and anything in moderation. No more denying yourself dessert or a cocktail.
I bought the second book for a friend that wanted to know my secret to my weight loss. It's no secret. They've been telling us how to do it for years. Now they're telling us in terms we can understand. It's all in there. Fast food, desserts, buffets, happy hour, backyard bbq's and so much more.

I highly recommend this book. It is extremely well researched and well written. It is very unsettling, and even downright shocking, which makes it hard to stop reading. You will likely pick it up with the intention of reading a few chapters and finish it in one night. The mind blowing similarities between the deaths of hundreds of young college men in the Midwest and North are discussed, followed by the arguments supporting and opposing the possibility that these men are being murdered and that their murders are related. The reader is encouraged to look at the facts and form their own opinions.

I came across this book after my own brother, Walton Matthew Ward, was murdered in October 2012 and his body dumped in the White River in Indianapolis, IN. It quickly became apparent that law enforcement had no plans of investigating, and essentially planned to sweep his case under the rug as I now know they have done to so many others. My family and I began trying to compile as much information as possible so that someday we might get answers. That brought us to the blog of crime writer Eponymous Rox, the author of this book. Reading his blog, it was apparent how much work he is doing to follow these cases and identify the discrepancies on many different levels between a true drowning death and a death that has been made to look like one. I then bought this book and am glad I did, there was a lot of information in it that I had not found while doing research of my own. I especially recommend this book if you are a college age man or a relative of a college age man, the knowledge is invaluable and potentially lifesaving.

excellent and well-researched

I read this book in just a few days and was very impressed.
It is well-written and makes a terrific case for suspicion regarding the many college aged students who have drowned. It could only have been better had the students who strongly seem to fit the pattern and survived been included. In summary a large number of college-aged young men with remarkably similar height and weight profiles have gone drinking with friends, suddenly disappeared, and then later been found dead in a nearby body of water. Behavior on video of them shows them to be very disoriented, confused, and physically staggering. Additionally many of them remove clothing and do things that appear as if they believe themselves to be in a different place than they truly are.
The facts shared by professionals on the similarities of the young men make it a compelling case for involvement and yet law enforcement continues to discount the
deaths.
It is very sad that the families of these young men have lost them, and also sad because most of them were honor students, athletes, future leaders of our country.
Kudos to the author for this excellent work on the subject.
