In his widely praised book, award-winning psychologist Jonathan Haidt examines the world’s philosophical wisdom through the lens of psychological science, showing how a deeper understanding of enduring maxims-like Do unto others as you would have others do unto you, or What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger-can enrich and even transform our lives.

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. The spirit is willing but the flesh is weak, lamented St. Paul, and this engrossing scientific interpretation of traditional lore backs him up with hard data. Citing Plato, Buddha and modern brain science, psychologist Haidt notes the mind is like an "elephant" of automatic desires and impulses atop which conscious intention is an ineffectual "rider." Haidt sifts Eastern and Western religious and philosophical traditions for other nuggets of wisdom to substantiate—and sometimes critique—with the findings of neurology and cognitive psychology. The Buddhist-Stoic injunction to cast off worldly attachments in pursuit of happiness, for example, is backed up by Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi's studies into pleasure. And Nietzsche's contention that what doesn't kill us makes us stronger is considered against research into post-traumatic growth. An exponent of the "positive psychology" movement, Haidt also offers practical advice on finding happiness and meaning. Riches don't matter much, he observes, but close relationships, quiet surroundings and short commutes help a lot, while meditation, cognitive psychotherapy and Prozac are equally valid remedies for constitutional unhappiness. Haidt sometimes seems reductionist, but his is an erudite, fluently written, stimulating reassessment of age-old issues. (Jan.)

From Booklist
Using the wisdom culled from the world's greatest civilizations as a foundation, social psychologist Haidt comes to terms with 10 Great Ideas, viewing them through a contemporary filter to learn which of their lessons may still apply to modern lives. He first discusses how the mind works and then examines the Golden Rule ("Reciprocity is the most important tool for getting along with people"). Next, he addresses the issue of happiness itself--where does it come from?--before exploring the conditions that allow growth and development. He also dares to answer the question that haunts most everyone--What is the meaning of life?--by again drawing on ancient ideas and incorporating recent research findings. He concludes with the question of meaning: Why do some find it? Balancing ancient wisdom and modern science, Haidt consults great minds of the past, from Buddha to Lao Tzu and from Plato to Freud, as well as some not-so-greats: even Dr. Phil is mentioned. Fascinating stuff, accessibly expressed. June Sawyers

Review
"Riveting... Brilliantly synthesising ancient cultural insights with modern psychology and even holding out some faint hope that your happiness, if not your tallness, might be marginally adjustable after all." Sunday Times "Marvellous... Haidt...takes us on an extraordinary journey... I don't think I've ever read a book that laid out the contemporary understanding of the human condition with such simple clarity and sense." -- James Flint Guardian "A superbly argued, crystal clear and intelligent blend of new directions in contemporary experimental psychology with traditional philosophical thought... And you know what? Reading it did actually make this reviewer happier." Arena "A delightful book... By some margin the most intellectually substantial book to arise from the 'Positive Psychology' movement." Nature "With singular gusto, Haidt measures ten 'Great Ideas' against past/present research in psychology and science. "LJ" 's verdict: Dr. Phil et al. don't have diddly on the old-school sages. No man is an island, indeed, and no modern reader should be without this carefully considered demystification of life" Library Journal Best Books 2006

An Enjoyable Read!
By Dan Wallace
I saw Chris Anderson (Wired Editor and TED co-founder) asked by Charlie Rose to name his favorite book of the last few years. "The Happiness Hypothesis" was the immediate response. Now this book is one of my favorites, too. The Happiness Hypothesis compares traditional philisohpical traditions with the lastest scientific discoveries, and the two ends meet well in the center. The author's own experiences provide narrative glue.

A major finding is that happiness is a set point for us, and that after good times and bad, we tend to return to our general level of happiness. At the same time, we can do things that help or hurt our happiness, and we can understand better how our minds and emotions work.

Factors that decrease happiness include persistent noise, lack of control, shame, dysfunctional relationships, and long commutes. Strong marriages, physical touch, meaningful relationships and religious affiliation tend to improve happiness. Activities with others enhance our happiness; status objects tend to separate us from others.

In terms of parenting, Haidt finds that secure children are well supported by parents who are nearby, providing safety and security. Avoidant children are neglected by their parents. And resistant children have parents who alternate between support and neglect. Haidt also shows how moral relativism is not good for children.

I was also fascinated by Haidt's observation that modernity and commercial culture slowly replaced the ideal of character with the idea personality, leading to a focus on individual preferences and personal fulfillment. This movement reached a height during the "values clarification" movement of the 1960s which taught no morality at all. The result of this is "anomie," a lost sense of self and right or wrong and feeling of being detached from other people and the world.

One of the most hopeful sections of the book talks about Martin Seligman's work on positive psychology, and the rediscovery of virtue. Seligman and Chris Peterson researched wisdom traditions and found that these six virtues are common across almost all cultures: (1) Wisdom; (2) Courage; (3) Humanity; (4) Justice; (5) Temperance; (6) Transcendence. These six categories serve to organize 24 character traits. (You can find the complete list on Wikipedia.) The conclusion is that you should work to cultivate your strengths, not your weaknesses. This area of study is a great breakthrough after 100 years of the psychological study of mental illness.

There were also many insightful nuggets I found in the excellent book, including:

- How oxytocin, cortisols and endorphins effect health and behavior.
- Haidt's belief that the chief causes of evil are moral idealism and high self-esteem.
- Letting off steam makes you angrier, not calmer.
- Wisdom is the ability to adapt, shape the environment, and know when to move to new environments.
- Pleasure comes more from making progress toward goals than from achieving them.
- Social constraints enhance happiness; total freedom decreases happiness (an insight seconded in "The Paradox of Choice").
- Trauma has benefits in that it shows how much adversity you can cope with. It also filters out false friends and changes priorities and philosophies toward the present.
- Passionate love cannot last; companionate love is what lasts.
- Haidt sees two types of diversity, demographic and moral.
- The three major dimensions of social relationships are liking, status and morality/ transcendence. Coherence across these spectrums leads to happiness.
- The six basic emotions that can be read on the face include joy, sadness, fear, anger, disgust and surprise.
- Happiness often results from the collective elevation in a church or political rally.
- The three levels of work are a job, a career and a calling. The more autonomy at work, the more happiness.
- Vital engagement in the world leads to love made visible, which is a sign of deep happiness.
- Work that does good for others and leads to income and recognition will enhance happiness.
- Apostates who try to leave a group and traitors who undermine a group are subject to atrocities.
- Group chanting can lead to mystical experiences, which provide a sense of spiritual connection that leads to happiness.
- Eastern views and conservative politics focus on the collective, while Western views and liberal politics tend to focus on the individual.
- Volunteerism increases happiness, and service learning in schools reduces dropout rates.

This is a brilliant and sweeping narrative, and well worth the read. The cross-disciplinary nature of this work reminds me of EO Wilson's seminal work, Consilience. And parts of this book remind me of one of my favorite books of contemporary philosophy: Status
Anxiety, by Alex de Bouten.

I truly loved the book.
By Brian Johnson
[[VIDEOID:9422f9c9cd9a77a3954a14d807c67011]] “Where does happiness come from? There are several different “happiness hypotheses.” One is that happiness comes from getting what you want, but we all know (and research confirms) that such happiness is short-lived. A more promising hypothesis is that happiness comes from within and cannot be obtained by making the world conform to your desires. This idea was widespread in the ancient world: Buddha in India and the Stoic philosophers in ancient Greece and Rome all counseled people to break their emotional attachments to people and events, which are always unpredictable and uncontrollable, and to cultivate instead an attitude of acceptance. This ancient idea deserves respect, and it is certainly true that changing your mind is usually a more effective response to frustration than is changing the world. However, I will present evidence that this second version of the happiness hypothesis is wrong. Recent research shows that there are some things worth striving for; there are some external conditions of life that can make you lastingly happier. One of these conditions is relatedness—the bonds we form, and need to form, with others. I’ll present research showing where love comes from, why passionate love always cools, and what kind of love is “true” love. I’ll suggest that the happiness hypothesis offered by Buddha and the Stoics should be amended: Happiness comes from within, and happiness comes from without. We need the guidance of both ancient wisdom and modern science to get the balance right.”

~ Jonathan Haidt from The Happiness Hypothesis

That’s officially the longest intro quote of any of the Notes I’ve created so far but OMG. Makes you wanna read the whole book, eh?! :)

Jonathan Haidt is a leading positive psychology researcher/professor at the University of Virginia and this book is an incredible look at ten “Great Ideas” from ancient wisdom that he brilliantly analyzes in the light of modern science while helping us apply the super practical stuff to our 21st century lives. It’s a great blend of intellectual rigor, philosophical wisdom and nuts and-bolts practicality that I highly recommend.

If this Note resonates with you, I *definitely* think you’ll love the book. I put it up there with Sonja Lyubomirsky’s How of Happiness and Tal Ben-Shahar’s Pursuit of Perfect and Happier as some must-read positive psychology goodness.

Here are some of the Big Ideas:

1. The Rider & The Elephant - Learn to ride your elephant!
2. Epiphanies - And lasting change.
3. Meditation - The magic pill.
4. Cognitive Therapy - It works.
5. Pulling the Splinter - The joy of taking responsibility.

Let’s get clear on our ultimate purpose and move toward it, lest we step in other people’s elephant poop, yo! :)

Psychological Tools that don't quite deliver Wisdom
By Rich
I really wanted to like this book more than I did. This book promises an exploration of ancient wisdom through psychology, but what it ultimately delivers is a discussion of various studies, many of which any reader who has taken Psych 101 will already be familiar with. I found the psychological discussion at times interesting and some of the principal concepts have significant potential--the divided self, the relation between reason and emotion, the tension between the vast ages of human evolution and the short termism of modern human life, but these themes are ultimately never fully developed. At other times the psychological discussion is quite tedious, with pages dedicated to summarizing psychological studies that could fit in a paragraph. Moreover, the "wisdom" was generally a summary of scientific research with some shallow nods to Buddhism. Consider this passage:

"Buddha got it exactly right: You need a method for taming the elephant [subconscious will], for changing your mind gradually. Meditation, cognitive therapy, and Prozac are three effective means of doing so."

Prozac? Really? This is not wisdom, this is psychology at its most superficial. (The author's reasoning for advocating Prozac is that studies suggest human beings are naturally subject to a spectrum of dispositions, some happy, some not. So a little chemical tweak may be what certain poor saps who have "lost" the "genetic lottery" might need to perk up. What the author fails to explain, however, is why it is necessary to take a naturally occurring spectrum of happy and unhappy people and feed pills to some of those people in order to make them conform to a desired level of happiness. And THAT, is where the wisdom part should come in, but it never does.) No wonder, the book's discussion is entirely based on the cold calculated studies of cognitive science. If you want wisdom, I'd suggest you drift to the psychoanalytic wing of the profession or just go straight to the Bhagavad Gita. One thing is certain: Buddha won't tell you to eat Prozac.

Here is a rich cornucopia of horror and ghosts stories, science fiction and fairy tales, fabulism and poetry that explore the realm of experience and emotion. Trigger Warning offers a good introduction to the works of Neil Gaiman, or a delightful addition to the collection of someone who has been following him for a long time. If you’re a fan, don’t miss this one.” (Oklahoma City Oklahoman)

“There is something for every type of Gaiman fan here, and those new to his work will find this to be a solid introduction to the type of stories he crafts: lyrical, literary, sometimes quite chilling, and always strange and provocative. ...This is a book to savor and enjoy.” (Bookreporter.com)

More things in heaven and earth, Horatio.
By EA Solinas
The mind of Neil Gaiman is a fertile place of gods, monsters, aliens, magic lingering in ordinary places and a sense that the world is a much wilder, stranger place than we think it is.

And all those things come up in "Trigger Warning: Short Fictions and Disturbances," Gaiman's third collection of his short stories and poems -- while these stories can be as different from each other as humanly possible (an ode to David Bowie, a few twisted fairy tales, a historical story about a Scottish dwarf with revenge on his mind), they share a sense of magic and cosmic wonderment, misting through his elegant, versatile prose.

Among the tales here:
* "Black Dog," a story set a few years after "American Gods." Shadow is wandering through England on his way back to the US, when he meets a kindly couple who allow him to stay in their home. But the specter of a faerie dog brings death, mystery, and an ancient magic that could be fatal even to an American god...
* A Scottish dwarf asks a former reaver to help him find a certain cave, supposedly filled with magical gold. As the two men journey to the Misty Isle, the dwarf gradually reveals his true reason for being there.
* A haunting look at the old age of Sherlock Holmes, reflecting on the decay of the British empire and solving one final mystery.
* A timid young artist hears that his first teenage girlfriend has been in contact with some of the people he knows... and the problem is, he made her up.
* Jemima Glorfindel Petula Ramsey's questionnaire, and exactly what happened to her fake-tan-loving sister Nerys. Hint: it involves floating, glowing, claims of godhood and dark chocolate.
* A year's worth of mini-stories, involving ghosts, pirates, genies, preteen soldiers, vicious ducks, a brazier, a homeless kid, a mysterious string of bizarre deliveries, disagreeing parents, igloos made of books, Australian fires and what they create, and a magical ring that keeps coming back.
* A handful of poems, about chairs, landladies, Saint Columba, a witch who "hid her life in a box made of dirt," and the evil fairy from "Sleeping Beauty."
* A flea market seller who has a strange story of time travel, interdimensional rooms, ancient empires, tiny statuettes and a boy named Farfal The Unfortunate.
* Obediah Polkinghorn, the Uninventor, who has the ability to alter reality so that certain inventions (flying cars, jetpacks, the Wispamuzak) never come into existence, and what he does when he finished uninventing forever.
* "Nothing O'Clock," a Dr. Who fanfic (does it count as a fanfic if it's professionally published, and is by a man who has written actual episodes?), where the Doctor and Amy arrive on Earth... only to discover that it is devoid of humans, after being officially sold to the Kin. How to fix it? Go back to when it was first sold by an unwitting family!
* A pair of fairy tales retold in Gaiman's sensibilities -- an update of "Diamonds and Toads" set in a bleak, dreary urban environment, and "The Sleeper and the Spindle," a sort of mash-up of "Snow White" and "Sleeping Beauty," starring a queen who decides to rescue a legendary sleeping princess with the help of her dwarf sidekicks.
* And several other stories that linger on the fringes -- a "lunar labyrinth" that grants wishes to people who successfully navigate it, a love letter, a mother lamenting her son's horrifying death at sea, a pleasantly unimpressive mother who knows of interesting "adventures," a man struggling to remember the name of a great author, a guy who learns of the madness that comes from visiting Jerusalem, a spooky little story about the terrifying Click-Clacks, and a mythic sci-fi ode to David Bowie.

Many authors are commonly called "magical," but Neil Gaiman deserves the label more than most -- he has a special knack for unpredictability that few authors can even approach. Not only can anything happen in his collections of short stories, but you have no idea what KIND of "anything" will flow from the wellspring of his mind. There's no obvious pattern, no overarching theme that might restrict his imagination.

And that is one of the best aspects of "Trigger Warning." In this collection, Gaiman deftly leaps from the macabre to the whimsical, the gloriously weird to the dramatic, the haunting to the magical. No matter how mundane the setting, he can draw back a veil and reveal something that was hidden from our eyes, whether it's dark magic ("Black Dog," "About Cassandra"), personal tragedy and drama ("Down To A Sunless Sea," "The Truth is a Cave in the Black Mountains") or just the strangeness of the world we live in which we otherwise might not notice ("Jerusalem").

And his writing is no less versatile. While every story is written in a crisp, shimmering style that is very recognizably his, he drifts around through different kinds of stories -- one is told through a questionnaire, another is an overheard monologue, and some are just conversations. What unites them is the glimmering clarity of his writing, full of beautiful similes ("His hair framed his face like a wolf-grey halo") and snappy cleverness ("And pterodactyls have been extinct for fifty million years." "If you say so, dear. Your father never really talked about it").

Neil Gaiman at his best is on display in "Trigger Warning: Short Fictions and Disturbances" -- a collage of shorter pieces, ranging from darkly enchanting novellas to magical little puffs of whimsy. There are more things in heaven and earth than are dreamt of in our philosophy, but a few of them can be found here.

Gaiman Excels at Short Fiction; Excellent Collection
By Scott Knight
I just finished reading Trigger Warning by Neil Gaiman, and once again he has hit the ball out of the park. This is another fantastic collection of short stories from one of the best story-tellers around. There is no specific theme running through the stories; however, Gaiman mentions that a "trigger warning" suggests that readers should be aware that they may encounter characters or situations that may "trigger" fear or otherwise upset them. (I didn't really see this, although several of the stories are dark, bordering on downright creepy).

While several of the stories were previously published, but they were all new to me. Among my favorites are: A Lunar Labyrinth (very creepy); The Case of Death and Honey (a terrific Sherlock Holmes story which also explains how he seems to live longer than he should); Nothing O'Clock (a Doctor Who story with the Eleventh Doctor: It seemed to perfectly capture Matt Smith's portrayal of the Doctor, and was a terrific read); and Kether to Malkuth (a bittersweet story that seems to be even deeper than it appears, and is hard to explain); and The Sleeper and the Spindle (a cool and unique retelling of the Snow White and Sleeping Beauty stories).

Gaiman is a master at his craft, and like pretty much everything else he writes, Trigger Warning is wonderful. It is immersive and sublime, hiding themes and bigger ideas in prose that is exquisite and easy to read (that should be a book blurb).

One caution - The main reason I wanted to read this book was for the story Black Dog, which closes the collection (it is a sequel to Gaiman's terrific American Gods). Unfortunately, my preview copy did not contain this story, which means I'm going to have to work to track it down.

I highly recommend Trigger Warning. Gaiman fans will love it, and the short story format provides an easy and unintimidating way to sample his works for those looking to read him for the first time.

I received a preview copy of this book from HarperCollins Publishers in exchange for an honest review.

Escapist fun from an awesome storyteller
By B. Case
Disturbances? Neil Gaiman’s newest short story collection is called “Trigger Warning: Short Fictions and Disturbances.” I just love that last word in the subtitle! It’s such a perfect word to convey the deliciously off-kilter feelings I felt when I read these stories. Even though this book has just been published, I’m already in the process of reading it a second time. I couldn’t resist. Gaiman is such an awesome storyteller and this collection really showcases his creative literary talent.

The first time I read this book, I was swept away with the pure joy of the reading experience. Of course, when the book ended, I felt a big let down. I wanted more stories. We human animals must have some innate longing for myth and fantasy; Gaiman’s stories seem to quench that longing in some essential and primal way. That’s the deep-seated urge that must draw me to his books.

I certainly don’t want to give the impression that I was overjoyed with each and every story. Isn’t it true that none of us ever love every chocolate in a box, every song in an album, or every story in a collection? Some stories are better than others, and a few I didn’t like at all, but in the balance, I was besotted…and that’s coming from a reader who doesn’t particularly like short stories in the first place. But I do love Gaiman, and reading him is all about being transport to another realm of reality, about having your normal everyday emotions disturbed (yes, here’s that word again), about being tipped off balance into a state of wonder, humor, terror, suspense, spine-tingling chills, or a delightful mixture of all of that, and more.

Every one of the stories in this collection was new to me, but as the author explained in the introduction, most have been published before. There are only three totally new stories. The remaining twenty-one were published one or more times in some other venue or media. But few people have been exposed to them there even though a few are major award winners. Most had a previous life as part of a multi-author anthology dedicated to a specific overarching theme. Five stories had a previous life in a multi-author anthology celebrating a famous author, namely: Gene Wolf, Ray Bradbury, Jack Vance, Sherlock Holmes, and Arthur C. Clarke. Two were collaborations with musical drama and performance artist Amanda Palmer. Four were published as stand-alone stories: one for a literary magazine, another for a newspaper, a third for a year-long interactive fan-based Twitter experiment, and a fourth for a BBC Radio 4 production. All are captivating and unique glimpses into the staggeringly creative mind of Neil Gaiman.

Most of the previously published stories in this book probably escaped notice by the lion’s share of Gaiman fans. In today’s world, relatively few people read short stories, especially when they’re published in obscure anthologies. By pulling together all his most recent short stories and selling them in one volume, Gaiman will be able to reach a far larger audience. When done well, short stories are the gems of the literary world. Gaiman’s short fiction deserves to be read and treasured. I rediscovered that while reading this book. I’d forgotten how marvelous short stories can be when they’re told by a master storyteller.

The collection is aimed at adults, but I’m sure Gaiman’s legions of young adult fans will love this book, too. None of the stories in this collection are appropriate for young children: this is not because they may cause nightmares, but rather because they deal with adult themes that children will not comprehend.

I loved this book. It was full of enchanting stories that delightfully disturbed my senses and inhabited my heart.

For those of you who may have encountered a good number of Gaiman’s short stories elsewhere, here a list of the stories in this book:

Making a Chair
A Lunar Labyrinth
The Thing About Cassandra
Down to a Sunless Sea
“The Truth Is a Cave in the Black Mountains…”
My Last Landlady
Adventure Story
ORANGE
A Calendar of Tales
The Case of Death and Honey
The Man Who Forgot Ray Bradbury
Jerusalem
Click-Clack the Rattlebag
An Invocation of Incuriosity
“And Weep, Like Alexander”
Nothing O’Clock
Pearls: A Fairy Tale
Kether to Malkurth
Feminine Endings
Observing the Formalities
The Sleeper and the Spindle
Witch Work
In Relig Odbrin
Black Dog

Very Informative!
By R. Hall
Awesome book that allowed me to fix an old violin I found at a yard sale. Includes a lot of old fashioned ideas on how to repair the wood. Also does a great job at explaining why certain methods work and why others do not. I can begin to understand how the acoustics work with the violin now. At times this can be a very dry and boring reading but extremely informative. I would recommend to anyone looking to learn more about violin repair. The book is clearly a reprint, but done in great quality.

Excellent Theme Concept, Not So Great Execution
By Mortal Man
I enjoy reading James Altucher and appreciate his sensibilities. I even corresponded with him briefly a few years ago, and appreciated his input on some writing I showed him. The theme of this book immediately caught my attention because I'm in a situation where I recently sold my own online business and concurrently took a job related to the deal, whereby I am once again a salaried employee after nearly 20 years of entrepreuneurship and solo consulting. With soon to be college-age kids at home, this was the right move for now, and it's nice that James addressed the notion that being in business for yourself is not necessarily the end-all and be all for a fulfilled life.

I'm going to be a little bit critical, though, with 3 stars (not worthless, but short of greatness!) by saying that the book seems a bit rushed both technically (typos, rough phrasing) and content-wise, where it seems that James is pulling in a grab-bag of self-help thoughts and ideas, which in some cases are contradictory and inconsistent. For example, in one section, he says it's "easy to caught up in ego..." etc. as a caution and in another "Ego. A real belief that you can be the best..." as foundation of persistence.

James likes to say that he doesn't give advice, just talks about what works or worked for him. Then why drag in all sorts of random advice and examples which don't fill out the theme, in my opinion, and seem wholely derivative in their presentation.

Recently on a long-drive for work I listened to James and Claudia interview Michael Singer, which for me was one of the most inspiring podcasts he's done - I had never heard of Singer, but I've listened now to that podcast multiple times and read his books because of that. For me, the inner journey is what "choosing yourself" is all about. If you can get past the clutter of your mind and the crazy externals, answers come. But much of this book just recycles trite bromides and success tales in a narrative that is a bit incoherent.

Finally, James' branding of "Choose Yourself" as the basis for yet another ambitious self-help enterprise is a bit off-putting, and the cynical part of me sees him entering that mutually admiring, inner circle of "famed" millionaires and billionaires who for all their accomplishments are not that interesting. They all love to interview one another! "Choose Yourself (R)" has arrived, and as the last section of the book outlines, you can form a local group - and they have formed - to spread the gospel. I don't mean to sound snarky, but that was my reaction. It's probably all good!

Anyway, I hope James can maintain originality and fresh insights in his ongoing writing and interviews - I'll stay tuned. Peace!

High hopes dashed very, very quickly.
By Rachel
Let me sum up this book for you right here:

- Take care of your mind and your body. You can't perfect if everything isn't tuned up.
- Have a "secret plan." Said secret plan is just taking the time to learn from others around you.
- Don't be afraid to quit your job if there's a better opportunity.
- Create multiple streams of wealth for yourself (you're on your own as to how).

For the other 180 pages, you uncomfortably watch Altucher masturbate to the fact he worked at HBO, got to impulsively quit his job, and has a wife that contributed to some of the book (maybe one chapter? It's unclear).

Great takeaway value for employees and employers alike.
By Tim Fargo
In this book James Altucher takes on some of the current mythology that you've got to be a swashbuckling entrepreneur to make it in life. As he points out there is plenty of room for a rich and fulfilling life in joining a workplace that you love (like his stint at HBO). Along the way you may decide to go it alone, or not. This book gets you thinking about how to maximize your potential as an employee and how doing that is always in your interest.

And it reminds you that all the romantic tales of being an entrepreneur can be pretty heartbreaking to experience on a personal level. The 85% failure rate becomes especially relevant if you become one of them.

In his usual way James' writing makes just about everything interesting so you'll be whisked away on a valuable journey. It frankly doesn't matter if you are an employee or an entrepreneur, this book need to find its way into your brain.

As he states in the book, "Mentally strong people learn how to learn." Now's a great time to start.

Critically Important!
By Richardinhingham
I am the director of a small learning center that teaches a wide spectrum of academic skills to students. Last night I was working with one of our students on the ACT. We used the "REAL ACT" guide, which I have always liked, and then went to Erica Meltzer's Complete Guide for more skill and strategy for the test.WOW! As usual Erica came to rescue, providing strategies for students at every level of skill development. We have a long history of great success with middle school test preparation, but using Erica's books has taken us to a much higher level with high school students! I cannot recommend her work OR her website highly enough. Check out [...]and BUY HER BOOKS to help your son or daughter!

Next to the Official Guides, Meltzer's books are the best.
By John Castellano
As an English tutor and teacher, this book has been invaluable in terms of explaining how to approach the various multiple-choice questions test takers encounter (ex: direct, inference, tone, vocabulary, etc.) I'm a fan of Meltzer's last two books (The Complete Guides to SAT Reading and ACT Writing) and this book does not disappointment. As her previous books, this book is also use-friendly for teachers and beneficial for students.

Her two practice tests at the end of this book also add extra assignments to the dearth of official and official looking ACT tests available.

Yes, the book has some typos and the her writing isn't the most gripping nor compelling work you will read; however, in terms of content and strategy, I don't know of a better book to supplement the reading section of the Real ACT Prep Guide.
