About the Author

Eugeniusz Rusiński graduated with a�Master of Engineering Degree in Mechanics and Machine Design from the Mechanical Faculty of Wrocław University of Technology in 1975. In the same year he was hired as assistant lecturer at his alma mater and started his PhD program, which he completed in 1980 and was awarded the Doctor of Science degree. In 1990 the Board of the Mechnical Faculty of Wrocław University of Technology awarded him the degree of Habilitated Doctor of Technical Sciences in machine construction and operation, specializing in theory of machines and mechanisms, for his dissertation entitled Microcomputer analysis of frames and superstructures of vehicles and construction machinery. In 1993 he was promoted to the position of Associate Professor, and in 2001 to the position of Full Professor. In 1996 the President of Poland awarded him the title of Professor of Technical Sciences. He developed experience in Poland and abroad, among others, in Germany, USA, India, Austria and Cuba.

In 1994 he was elected head of the Department of Computer-Aided Design (CAD), which, under his leadership, was transformed in 2013 into the Department of Machine Design and Research of Wrocław University of Technology. From 1995 to 1998 he was Deputy Director, and then from 2000 to 2005, Director of the Institute of Machine Design and Operation. In the years 2005-2012 he was Dean of the Mechanical Faculty. In the years 2008-2016 he was Vice-Rector for Research and Cooperation with the Industry at Wrocław University of Technology.

He supervised nineteen doctoral dissertations. He is author of numerous scientific publications. He has received the Team Award of the Prime Minister of the Republic of Poland five times for

Jerzy Czmochowski graduated in 1978 with a master's degree in engineering from the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering of Wrocław University of Technology. In 1985 he defended his doctoral dissertation entitled: “Stablity analysis of non-simply-connected three-layer plates using the finite element method", under the supervision of Prof. Franciszek Romanow. After completing his doctoral studies in 1982 he started work as senior assistant lecturer, and from 1989 to 2009 he was employed as research and teaching assistant professor at the Institute of Machine Design and Operation of WrUT. In 2008 he was awarded the degree of habilitated doctor by the Mechanical Faculty of Wrocław University of Technology. On November 12, 2009 he was appointed to the position of Professor of WRUT. He supervised two doctoral dissertations. His achievements include papers in the fields of fracture mechanics, diagnostics of emergency states, dynamics of surface mining machines, thermal and mechanical analysis of power industry equipment and strength analysis of load-carrying structures of machines. He received the Award of the Prime Minister of the Republic of Poland for outstanding scientific achievements in 1999 and in 2011. In 2010 he was awarded the Gold Cross of Merit.

Przemysław Moczko�graduated with a degree in mechanical engineering from Wrocław University of Technology, Faculty of Mechanical Engineering. In October 1999 he started the PhD program in Design and Operation of Machines. The focus of his doctoral dissertation, which he defended in 2003, was on issues related to predicting the durability of elements of load-carrying structures. In 2015 he received the degree of habilitated doctor for his achievements in applying numerical and experimental methods in condition assessment and prediction of durability of load-carrying structures of machines and in monitoring the processes and condition of low-speed machines. He is also co-author of significant technical achievements: 1. The excavating unit cutting elements of surface mining machines. 2. Innovative fab wheel of the WPK-5.35 centrifugal fan. His scientific achievements are confirmed by numerous publications in national and international journals and by patents and pending patent applications. He also has the status of an international independent expert on assessment of designs of specialist mining equipment, their implementation and compliance with required standards.

Damian Pietrusiak�graduated with a degree in mechanical engineering from Wrocław University of Technology, Faculty of Mechanical Engineering. In October 2009 he started the PhD program in Design and Operation of Machines. In 2013, he defended his doctoral dissertation entitled: "Assessment of the dynamics of load-carrying structures of bucket-wheel excavators with the application of modal analysis". Currently he is Assistant Professor at the Department of Machine Design and Research. In his scientific work he focuses on structural dynamics and statics of load-carrying structures as well as on the application of innovative engineering solutions in the heavy industry, the automotive industry and other sectors. He specializes in vibration and modal analysis with the use of numerical and experimental methods. He cooperates with different industries as contractor and manager of numerous research projects. He is an author of many research papers and patents/patent applications.

Excellent introduction - scientific and fair

Imaginatively written, covering many of the key points - this is a great introduction to Buddhism for a modern Western person with no background in the subject.
As a scholar of Buddhist studies and a meditator, I've searched for years for a single book that would introduce my favourite topic to friends and family unfamiliar with it, without boring them to tears with complex ancient Indian cosmology, or turning them off with references to mystical mumbo jumbo.
This book, Siddhartha's Brain, seems to walk the fine line well between too much information (complex terminology) and not enough (skimming over important points). The author approaches the subject with an air of skepticism, which is helpful to the modern secular mindset, before progressing to showing the veracity of the claims. He uses science extensively, which ends up being the book's only drawback - a little too many 'a study showed that...' type references. He also tends to take the latest unresolved scientific issues as a springboard into speculation, a little too often. But in the end, it does no harm because he's hinting that beneath all the historical and cultural mumbo jumbo around traditional Buddhism, there is some very real value in its teachings, even if the science isn't yet up to the stage of being able to document it.
So if you're a newcomer who is curious as to what this whole Buddhism gig is about, do yourself a favour and read this. And then sit ;-)

A very intelligent enlightenment book...

This book provides a very articulate and thorough explanation of what enlightenment is scientifically and according to Buddhists texts, and the processes believed to get there. I especially liked the ancient Buddhist quotes and teachings, which lay the grounding philosophy for what I want from enlightenment.

Great insights into the human mind.

Loved this book. It provided so much insight. It is not a religious book per se although it is not hostile to religion. It is more psychological and neurological than I expected but I loved it all.

About the Author
ANDREA A. LUNSFORD is professor of English at Stanford University and also teaches at the Bread Loaf School of English. A past chair of CCCC, she has won the major publication awards in both the CCCC and MLA. For Bedford/St. Martin’s, she is also the author of The St. Martin's Handbook, Sixth Edition, The Everyday Writer, Fourth Edition, and EasyWriter, Fourth Edition, and co-author, with John J. Ruszkiewicz, of The Presence of Others, Fifth Edition, and Everything's an Argument, Fifth Edition.

JOHN J. RUSZKIEWICZ is a professor at the University of Texas at Austin where he has taught literature, rhetoric, and writing for more than thirty years. A winner of the President’s Associates Teaching Excellence Award, he was instrumental in creating the Department of Rhetoric and Writing in 1993 and directed the unit from 2001-05. He has also served as president of the Conference of College Teachers of English (CCTE) of Texas. For Bedford/St. Martin's, he is also the author of How to Write Anything and co-author, with Andrea A. Lunsford, of The Presence of Others, Fifth Edition, and Everything's an Argument, Fifth Edition.

KEITH WALTERS is professor of applied linguistics at Portland State University. Much of his research focuses on language and identity in North Africa, especially Tunisia, and the United States. He has also taught freshman composition and English as a second/foreign language.

everything's an argument

I believe that the textbook "Everything's an Argument/with Readings" has a really great technique in showing that anything is a possible argument. I really love how the book, edition 5, is up to date in the happenings in the world around us, which makes it easier to relate to each argument discussed. This book really goes into great depth in explaining how to read an argument, write an argument, how to recognize style and present arguments, how to evaluate arguments, and arguments itself. I found this book to be very helpful in understanding different contexts of argumentation and representation in each context. There are so many things found in this book that I would have never looked at as an argument. There are so many different types of arguments surrounding us in forms of pictures, articles, videos, cartoons, and many more. The evaluations of this book truly opened my eyes to the different views on not only argumentation but also the knowledge and ideas that go into an argument. This is a book you need to read if you want to know anything and everything about argumentation.

I had to buy (rent) for my ENG102 course at Arizona State. I really enjoy the book's modern and topical approach. It tackles traditional rhetorical approaches but also knows what year it is and includes modern mediums/issues.

Valid experience, but FAR from a full picture of Ayahuasca in Iquitos

I've been in Ayahausca apprenticeship for six years, spending the majority of that time living in Iquitos, Peru (the area where Osha spent his four months.) While in some ways, this book needed to be written (mainly to point out the starry eyes that most people enter the Medicine with, myself included; also that there are half-assed shamans who will totally exploit that) but overall, ending up with a s***ty shaman for four months doesn't give someone the right to speak as if he knows the entirety of the picture.

I give him credit for sharing so openly (have mixed feelings about the amount of real names, due to general confidentiality ethics, but whatever), and I'm sure his experience was exactly what he said it was. But he speaks of an apprenticeship where his shaman basically manipulated him to do many things, including pay for everything, help run the ceremonies when he clearly wasn't ready, and participate in gossip that fed the competition amongst that culture of shamans. He speaks of the difference between Christians "letting go to God's will" and shamans "dominating their own will over God's" - this one really got me as I know shamans who are devout Christians and are on their knees in surrendering prayer during ceremony. And not every shaman engages in the darker practices that his guy did. I'm not saying there's no truth to what he's written, but he only has this one, relatively short experience with a "grey" shaman - not enough to speak for the others or the Medicine itself.

He speaks of getting a small glimpse into the emotional healing aspect - something his shaman never once mentioned. Some of that's on the shaman, but most of it's on Osha - the Medicine meets you where your intention lies. If he had approached ceremony in the interest of uncovering his emotional baggage, I'm sure his experiences would have been much different, no matter what the shaman said about it.

It also drove me nuts how he didn't see the parallels of being starry-eyed and jumping from healer to healer, ultimately landing on a Christian one who has him renounce everything and follow their way. Sound familiar? Did he not notice the pattern?

Either way, I recommend AGAINST this one for any newcomers - this is through the lens of inexperience and tunnel vision. I gave him two stars for his willingness to share, but that's about it. Nothing personal, but I feel strongly enough to write my first review ever here...

A Thoroughly Enjoyable Must-Read!

Prior to reading this book, I was not at all familiar with shamanism and had never heard of ayahuasca. My ignorance, however, did not detract from my appreciation of this open and honest narrative.

I would recommend this book not only to anyone interested in shamanism, but also to anyone drawn to stories of the human condition.

The author's first-person telling of his search for meaning and enlightenment pulled me in and made me wish I had been there. At times, I wanted to be the author's older brother and talk sense in to him. At other times, I simply wanted to be his friend--to put my hand on his shoulder and assure him that everything would be okay.

Much (perhaps all) of the text for this book was taken from the author's daily journaling, the candor of which makes the author vulnerable to both our judgements and our empathy. Ultimately, for the courage to share his story with such honesty, the author deserves our respect.

It's a fascinating and fun read that I can best describe as The Alchemist meets Harry Potter meets Indiana Jones. I eagerly await both the sequel and the movie!

Interesting Read

I just finished Osta's book and found it interesting. Having just dreamt of some ceremonies in Peru, I couldn't put it down. I think anyone contemplating going to Peru to Drink with the Curanderos should most definitely read this. Shamans are complex characters and are not above any human flaws. The altered state under ayahuasca can have a wily, trickster coyote feel to it. Seekers should be aware that being under such a heavy, intense, intoxicated and vulnerable state poses a climate where one can be taken advantage of, in both worlds. Practitioners often project and transfer their own ideas and beliefs onto the leaders of these ceremonies. One can also experience profound healing, spiritual revelation, as well as psychological insights. Andrew's book demonstrates this. Javier seems like a powerful and interesting character. With ayahuasca, we really aren't in Kansas anymore.

It is fitting to define Ducati’s history as a dream, because the adventure began in a dark laboratory in the center of Bologna, in Via Collegio di Spagna 7, when the workforce consisted of just two workers and a secretary. Probably not even the Ducati brothers could have imagined what would one day become. Two employees at the small laboratory became almost 1200 in 1936, and the company grew in overwhelming fashion.
 
If we look back and think of that small condenser built by two workers in 1926, we are amazed and can truly see how compelling and fascinating the story of this company is.

Semioticians began by looking at literature but have gradually applied their techniques to other disciplines, including music. The late Naomi Cumming, violinist and music theorist, based this consideration of the sources of musical expression on her experiences as a performer―with interesting, if rarely surprising, results. Cumming argues from the musical score and from the physical attributes of the performer toward a theory of musical analysis relying on C.S. Peirce's groundbreaking philosophy. It is worth noting, as musical theorists generally do not, that there is no such thing as analysis in music. There is only interpretation, because alternative conclusions about even the simplest music are inherent in its study. Total agreement concerning the meaning of any music is impossible. Although Cumming's arguments are on the whole reasonable, toward the end she veers off into a defense of some of the new musicology's more preposterous practitioners. Although the world of contemporary humanities scholarship is highly contentious, her book would have been better without the polemic. About the Author

Naomi Cumming was a fine violinist and music theorist. She published a host of journal articles and lectured internationally on the philosophy, psychology, and semiotics of music; her article on musical semiotics will appear in the Revised New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians. She was a Fulbright fellow at Columbia University, a research fellow in music theory at the Department of Philosophy of the University of Melbourne, and recipient of an award from the Society for Music Theory in 1998.

The point of departure for this book is the literature on self-regulated learning that tells us that deep, lasting, independent learning requires learners to bring into play a range of cognitive skills, affective attitudes, and even physical activities – about which most students are wholly unaware; and that self-regulation, which has little to do with measured intelligence, can be developed by just about anyone and is a fundamental prerequisite of academic success.

Linda Nilson provides the theoretical background to student self-regulation,the evidence that it enhances achievement, and the strategies to help students develop it. She presents an array of tested activities and assignments through which students can progressively reflect on, monitor and improve their learning skills; describes how they can be integrated with different course components and on various schedules; and elucidates how to intentionally and seamlessly incorporate them into course design to effectively meet disciplinary and student development objectives. Recognizing that most faculty are unfamiliar with these strategies, she also recommends how to prepare for introducing them into the classroom and adding more as instructors become more confident using them.

The book concludes with descriptions of courses from different fields to offer models and ideas for implementation.

About the Author
Linda Nilson now retired, directed three faculty development centers at major research universities during her 28-year career. She also authored several books: Teaching at Its Best: A Research-Based Resource for College Instructors (2016), now in its fourth edition, The Graphic Syllabus and the Outcomes Map: Communicating Your Course (2007), Creating Self-Regulated Learners: Strategies to Strengthen Students’ Self-Awareness and Learning Skills (2013), Specifications Grading: Restoring Rigor, Motivating Students, and Saving Faculty Time (2015), and, with Ludwika A. Goodson, Online Teaching at Its Best (2017). She has given over 450 keynotes, webinars, and workshops at conferences, colleges, and universities nationally and internationally. After receiving her Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, she was a sociology professor at UCLA.

Barry J. Zimmerman is a Professor Emeritus of Educational Psychology at the Graduate School and University Center of the City University of New York. He has conducted research and written extensively on the role of social learning and self regulatory processes of children, youth, and adults. He has written more than 200 research articles, book chapters, and professional conference papers. He has also authored or edited 14 books or journal volumes on social cognitive and self regulatory processes in the learning of children and youth. His most recent book is Self-Regulated Learning and Academic Achievement: Theoretical Perspectives.

If you are an educator, you need to read this book. It is harrowing to understand that decades of research have not brought us closer to understanding how our students learn. It's even more worrisome, that we are not alone - our students do not understand how to learn. Nilson provides a very interesting perspective on understanding the student as learner and what students need to do to enhance their learning bench- strength, and help educators understand how they can help their students improve their self-discipline, their focus, their THINKING.

Beautiful images, terrible book design.

Henrik Purienne's images are really easy to enjoy. Beautiful girls who all look like they've spent the day relaxing at the beach in various states of dress (or undress). Most of the photographs appear to be reproduced from recent issues of Mirage magazine, which Purienne is the creator of, or American Apparel campaigns that he shoots. Some of his best work from his archive (that I've seen on his website over the years) are missing and that's kind of disappointing. But my biggest issue with the book, which is bad enough that I would reduce 2-stars from my rating is that many of the layouts in the book are of vertical images printed as a two-page spread. So in a few cases, there's a photo of a woman's face, but the book's gutter runs right through the center of her face. It's not very good looking and simply having a vertical image laid out "sideways" so the book must be turned to view it is not a good decision. Another minor critique is that several pages are wasted on filler images that do not add anything to Purienne's purpose as a photographer. For instance, I don't think anyone who is a fan of Purienne's work is remotely interested in seeing a 2-page spread of an inflatable raft or a full page image of flamingos.

Nice snap shot style photography of cute girls.

This book deliver as a photo essay project for Mr. Purienne.
The image has a snap shot quality, in accord to the style of the photographer, which is wholly expected.
It meets my expectation and the layout art direction is simple but fits this book.

The perfect coffee table book

I have never had a photo book receive so much attention at my home. Everyone loves this book and cannot put it down. Beautifully shot (in film) and gorgeous women. Henrik truly has a gift.
