Review

“This book's major strengths are its content, which is excellent; its organization, which is logical; and the fact that it devotes considerable attention to counterterrorist strategies and operations.”– Nicholas J. Steneck, The Ohio State University

From the Publisher
Unbiased in perspective, this text 1) examines the known facets of contemporary terrorism -- explaining what terrorism is, who carries it out, how terrorist acts are committed, 2) analyzes the laws and special forces which nations within the international community have created to meet this challenge, and 3) predicts forthcoming patterns of terrorism in the new century. Post Cold War in focus and written specifically for undergraduate students, it helps them evaluate the dimensions of the problems presented by contemporary terrorism, and challenges them to develop solutions.

A textbook on Terrorism
By Yehoram Gordon
The book is a thorough review of the differnet aspects of terrorism, and as such it fits as an undergraduate textbook on the subject. Combs reviews the history of terrorism, different types of terrorism, and how people and governmnets dealt with this phenomenon during the years.
The book is written is a clear and communicative style, and each chapter ends with several issues for indepth thinking and discussion.
The relatively small size of the book, the clarity and exhaustiveness of its coverage of terrorism make it attractive to a busy student who wishes to learn about terrorism but has very little time to spend on such study. I truely think the book merits 5 point especially compared to other material written on this subject these days.

Excellent Book
By Smith, JR
I am a prior student of Cindy Combs and have studied terrorism for over 5 years. I own both a copy of the 3rd and 4th edidtions and can say without a doubt the book provides an excellent introduction to the study of terrorism. I have read reviews concerning the book and must say that the information is outdated, but it is meant as a guideline. The book is best used in conjunction with the Encyclopedia of Terrorism and the Terrorism Readers (aka governement reports on activity and News articles concerning recent actions).

Too many errors
By Chris
There are too many factual errors in this book. Also, there is too much emphasis on events and groups that were relevant in the 1970's through the 1990's, but no longer are important.

Page 47: Timothy McVeigh was not a member of a militia in Michigan. The author also has him confused with Eric Rudolph whose mother involved him in the Christian Identity Movement. McVeigh parents divorced when he was 10 and McVeigh was raised by his father. Co-defendant Terry Nichols was alleged to have had a relationship with the Michigan Militia.

Page 55: The "doomed September 11 flights" were not engaged in trying to "talk down" the hijackers. The pilots were immediately set upon and killed with box cutters. There were no negotiations.

Page 59: "the emergence of terrorism needs three ingredients: a disaffected individual, and enabling group...." Lone Wolf terrorists do not need an enabling group.

Page 64:..."The characteristics that O'Ballance suggests of sophistication and education are less true of post-1970s terrorists than they were of terrorists prior top that time." This is not so when you factor that the internet has created a cadre of high tech, computer savvy terrorists with understanding of how to create and use WMDs.

Page 169: "In the hijacking of TWA 847...the captain of the plane was transmitting information to authorities on the ground. The hijackers killed the Captain. The press was free and the cost was the life of the pilot." The pilot was not killed during this event. Captain John Testrake died of cancer in 1996.

Page 189: "There are accounts, for example, suggesting that certain local British commanders in 1769 planned to give to the native Americans, as a peace offering blankets from a military hospital..." This happened in 1763 at Ft. Pitt.

Page 193: "Puerto Rican nationalists have been active for more than four decades...In addition to the Matcheteros...and Omega 7 operated in the United States." Omega 7 was an anti Castro group, not a Puerto Rican Nationalist group.

Page 193: "This ambivalence is compounded by the strategic importance placed on Puerto Rico by the U.S. military which continues to use portions of the territory for target practice..." No, Vieques Island was used for Navy bombing runs but closed in 2003 after Puerto Rican protests.

Page 200: "The Montana Freemen militia group received considerable attention after the Oklahoma City bombing attack by Timothy McVeigh, who had been a member of this group." Timothy McVeigh was not a member of the Montana Freemen.

There are more errors, but I grow tired.
